The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) held a press parley and cocktail last Sunday (May 19) at Rhapsodys, Victoria Island, Lagos. The event was used to present the 2013 edition of the festival, which will take place in Calabar from November 10 through November 17.

The event was attended by various dignitaries and Nollywood stars. Some of those who were present are the Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State, Oronto Douglas, Chioma Ude (Founder, AFRIFF), Emem Isong, Charles Novia, Rita Dominic, Kate Henshaw, Chioma Akpotha, Nse Clifford Sule, and Omoni Oboli.

Tinsel’s Episode 1000 Autograph Signing in Port Harcourt

Stars of the M-Net soap opera, Tinsel, were in Port Harcourt last Saturday (May 18) for an autograph signing session at Silverbird Cinemas. This was part of activities, in the run-up to the 1000th episode of the soap opera, which will air on AfricaMagic Entertainment (DSTV 151), on Wednesday (May 23).

Some of the stars at the autograph signing session were Victor Olaotan, Iretiola Doyle, Funmi Holder, Iyke Okechukwu, and Tomi Odunsi.

Trailer: Invasion 1897

Invasion 1897 is a historical film produced and directed by acclaimed director, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen. The film stars Mike Omoregbe, Segun Arinze, and Paul Obazele. There is also a special appearance by late veteran actor, Justus Esiri. Invasion 1897 is scheduled to be released in 2014.

About the Film
In 1897 the British Empire invaded the Benin Kingdom and made away with artifacts belonging to the Benin Kingdom. Invasion 1897 attempts to open up the hidden truths behind the invasion of the Benin Kingdom from the Nigerian perspective to the world.

Coming Soon: Crimson

Crimson is a web series produced by Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju. It was written and directed by Daniel Effiong, and it stars Seun Ajayi. The series features, OC Ukeje, Najite Dede, and Toyin Osinaike. According to the writer, Daniel Effiong, he wanted to create stories connecting various icons of Nigerian political history. Some of the characters in the series are loosely based on real individuals. Crimson is scheduled to be released in 2013.

Today (May 19) is the birthday of popular actor, Yemi Blaq. He is from Ondo (Nigeria). He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Benin. He started acting professionally in 2005. Some of his movies are Sinking Sands, The Haunting, High Blood Pressure, My Idol, Entanglement, and Letters To a Stranger.

In 2012. he won the award for Best Actor at the Zuma Film Festival, for his role in the movie, The Impostor.

Film Africa 2013 Calls For Film Submissions

Film Africa, London’s largest festival of African cinema, has announced that it is now accepting film submissions for its 2013 edition, which will run from November 1 through November 10. The festival is accepting submissions for all its categories, including feature length fiction films, documentaries, experimental and short films. The festival accepts films from African filmmakers living in Africa or in the Diaspora, or films by non-African filmmakers about Africa.

‘Turning Point’ Lagos Premiere For May 24

The Lagos premiere of the drama film, Turning Point, will take place at Silverbird Galleria, Victoria Island, on May 24, 2013. The movie was directed by Niyi Towolawi, and it stars Igoni Archipong, Jackie Appiah, K.D Aubert, Patience Ozokwo, Todd Bridges, Oge Okoye, Enyinna Nwigwe, and Ernie Hudson.

Turning Point was nominated for the 2013 AMAA prize for Best Film By an African Abroad. Patience Ozokwo was nominated for the 2013 AMAA prize for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, for her role in Turning Point.

The theatrical release of Turning Point will also be on May 24, 2013.

Africa Film Development Awards For June 29

Pan African Film Development and Advancement Foundation, PAFDAF; through its registered project African Film Development Foundation, AFDF holds the African Film Development Awards, AFDA. The event marks a reawakening of the need for African sensitive filmmaking ventures. It will also further such sentiments in Diaspora Africa filmmaking projects from concept to exhibition practices.

AFDA…in the spirit of Africa will run through Lectures/Symposium on African Cinema, June 28; African Cultural Night also on June 28 and Awards/Gala Night on the 29th. The awards after party will be on June 30 at Zanzibar Island.
