The Stella Damasus Speech At W4A 2012 Awards

Star actress, Stella Damasus is an ambassador for Women 4 Africa (W4A), a UK-based organization dedicated to recognizing and appreciating African women who are making an impact, in various walks of life. She spoke at the Women4Africa 2012 awards, which took place in London on May 19.

In an impassioned and inspiring speech, the actress highlighted some of the challenges facing African women, using her life as an example. In a moving address, she told the audience that when she was widowed at 26, she had two children to take care of, bills to pay, and only N8000 in her account. Faced with these challenges, she went back to work immediately, rather than wait on other people for assistance. At the time, she was vilified for this decision, but she explained to the audience, that women in Africa cannot afford to wait around for other people to solve their problems for them.

The star actress also spoke at length about the spectre of domestic violence, and the need to address it. She stressed that women need to be educated, enlightened, and empowered in order to take their rightful place in society.
